This weekend Alisa and I exhibited and debuted new comics at Brooklyn's first annual King Con. Hopefully other exhibitors are remarking about how EXCELLENTLY we were treated. I've never been to a con where the organizers:
1. welcomed you at the door and escorted you to your table.
2. delivered bottled water to your table every few hours to keep you hydrated (and happy!)
3. played modest mouse while you waited for coffee at the upstairs cafe.
4. rocked this TOTALLY EXCLUSIVE red velvet security rope service for the exhibitors.
5.made announcements every few minutes (albeit a little too loudly on the speaker system) about general going-ons and con-news.
6.had their sh*t together, and if/when issues came up, made sincere efforts to accommodate and happify.
7. came to their senses and gave Steve Flack a megaphone.

The crowd we got was diverse, in a great mood, supported art with their dollars, and made Alisa and I feel wonderful for two whole days. We did excellent and can't wait for next year!

The best part of selling a music influenced comic/zine/artbook ''thingie'' is connecting with new and old fans of punk/hardcore live shows. This gal gave me a great music rec, checkout the knockdown . I got the heads up on the nasty second show the Getup Kids did (the one who dressed up as the tin man for the Halloween show had an allergic reaction to the paint and couldn't sing, yikes), talked about how sweet Polar Bear Club was, and oh! A quick shout to Jon from brooklyn monster factory. Jon's an oldschool hardcore scene cat who runs a great comic shop between Windsor & Prospect in Brooklyn with his brother.

I don't recall this gent's name, but he's hard at work on a romantic comedy screenplay that takes place in a game studio. For the first (and possibly last) time, we took a verbal lap around THQ KAOS, Bungie, and the CMJ music festival in one breath. Speaking of games and art, our concept artist friend Pete Lazarski also exhibited. Pretty sweet chat!
Jeremy Arumbulo and I talked about how both our parents demanded us home next weekend for the Manny Pacquiao fight. It's a filipino thing.
Our pals Raina and Dave gave a panel talk on Sunday.

When I'm not doing concept art or game art, I'm a budding entrepreneur looking to get a small game initiative off the ground. That being said, it's become a priority to create as many opportunities for face to face chats with the audiences I'm working to appeal to. Business lingo sums this up as 'qualifying your customer base'.

artists at cons! use your merchandise as a way to chat about what your customers are into! make art that appeals to an audience:)

If you're a creative professional about to undertake a large project or are currently in-production, it can be helpful to poll the intended audience of their likes/dislikes to help give borders and definition to your work. In this parallel way of making art WHILE getting to know your fan, you'll improve your chance of reaching a bigger audience when you're ready to sell something.

every chat you'll have may not lead to a sale, but understand that simply getting to know someone's likes or dislikes is a huge value proposition! huge metric-gathering companies are paid MILLIONS to do what you can do for yourself. friendliness = good business.

One of my game projects, a rhythm based beat-em up, was ready to be pitched about 3 weeks ago. Core gameplay had been hashed out, a few storyboards were mocked up, and I had a small library of character designs done.I attended the Game X game and media expo in Oaks, PA last weekend, and the timing couldn't have been more perfect.

Game X provided an incredibly diverse audience to pitch my game to. In one weekend every kind of enthusiast passed my table, including hardcore gamers, casual players, art directors, other indie game developers, art students, grads, marketing and sales executives, press, and simply inquisitve types.

I elevator pitched the big features of my game and got feedback. All kinds of feedback. Some people loved it. Others wouldn't play it (and told me so!). Professionals asked questions about logistical issues. Artists gave opinions on the art style.

Artists! Never shirk from honest feedback of your work. Use it to your advantage by constantly iterating improvements to your development based on that feedback. Don't veer off course from your guiding light, but use feedback to add precision and focus to how you'll reach that light.

every little chat is important. see the value in conversation, not just sales.

Always be looking for ways to touch that hot stove.

The more comfortable you get with receiving feedback parallel to your development cycle, the better leverage you'll have with deploying a finished product to an audience that WANTS it.

The talented crew at Digital Roar Studios have been hard at work grinding away on their first original IP called Ascension War. They've just released some teaser trailers on youtube of early conceptual art and in-game models. Make sure you watch both on the high-quality setting. I've been responsible for most of the vehicle/ship concepts. Ascension has been a labor of love for all of us, and I couldn't be prouder working with this team.
